Dealer Finance NZ: What to Check Before You Buy

Considering dealer finance in New Zealand? Check the total price, fees, add-ons, repayment terms, and contract before you commit to the car.

Dealer finance can make a vehicle purchase feel simple. The car, trade-in, extras, and finance can all appear in one conversation.

That convenience does not remove the need to understand the full deal. The weekly repayment is only one part of the contract.

Prepare the finance questions before the vehicle decision becomes urgent.

The finance discussion often starts while the vehicle purchase is still being negotiated.

Start with a guide repayment

A guide repayment can help you decide whether a price range deserves more attention. It is a planning figure, not a rate quote or approval.

The ELoanz vehicle finance calculator lets you change the purchase price, deposit, example rate, and term. This shows how each input changes the guide repayment.

Check the whole dealer offer

Before you sign, separate the vehicle deal from the finance details. Write down:

  • the total vehicle price
  • the deposit and trade-in value
  • the amount financed
  • the interest rate and whether it is fixed
  • the loan term and repayment frequency
  • establishment, administration, and security-registration fees
  • warranties, insurance, accessories, and other add-ons
  • early repayment terms and any final payment

The New Zealand Consumer Protection guidance on car sales contracts also recommends checking the total price, vehicle details, add-ons, deposit, and finance information.

Ask for the documents before you decide

Read the finance contract and vehicle purchase agreement as separate documents. Ask for copies that you can review away from the sales desk.

If a number or term is unclear, ask what it means and how it changes the total amount paid. Do not rely on the weekly figure alone.

Dealer finance and a broker-led enquiry are different starting points

Dealer finance begins inside the vehicle sale. A broker-led enquiry can begin before you choose the car or agree to a purchase.

Starting earlier lets you record the price range, deposit, term, and seller path before any formal lender step. It does not guarantee a better rate or an approval.

The practical order

  1. Set a realistic vehicle price range.
  2. Review a guide repayment.
  3. Start an enquiry with the purchase context.
  4. Compare the full contracts and total costs that are available to you.
  5. Commit only after you understand the vehicle and finance terms.

Guide repayment only. Not an approval. Subject to lender criteria, affordability, asset details, terms, fees, and documents.
