Vehicle Finance Basics

How Car Finance Works in NZ

Learn how car finance works in New Zealand, from a guide repayment and enquiry through lender assessment, rates, fees, terms, and settlement.

Dashboard and controls inside a modern vehicle

Car finance has several separate stages. The website enquiry is the start of the conversation, not the final lender decision.

Understanding each stage helps you keep the vehicle purchase and the finance contract in view at the same time.

The vehicle attracts the attention, but the finance structure determines the repayment commitment.

1. Start with the purchase context

Record the expected price, deposit, loan term, seller type, and vehicle use. These details shape the enquiry and the documents that can follow.

A vehicle finance calculator can show a guide repayment with an example rate. The result is not a quote, approval, or statement that the repayment is affordable for you.

2. Submit an enquiry

An ELoanz enquiry sends your contact and purchase details to the broker team. The team reviews the context and contacts you about possible next steps.

The enquiry does not apply to every lender automatically. Any formal application or lender submission requires the correct information and your consent.

3. Prepare for affordability and document checks

A formal lender assessment can include income, expenses, existing debts, credit history, identity, address, and vehicle information. The lender decides what evidence it needs.

The lender also decides whether to offer finance and what conditions apply. ELoanz does not approve a loan through this website.

4. Review the rate, fees, and term together

The interest rate is only one part of the total cost. Review:

  • the amount financed
  • the interest rate and whether it is fixed
  • the loan term
  • the repayment amount and frequency
  • establishment and administration fees
  • security-registration costs
  • early repayment terms
  • any final or balloon payment

A lower regular repayment can result from a longer term. That can also increase the total interest paid. The vehicle loan term guide explains this trade-off.

5. Understand the security

A lender can take a security interest over the financed vehicle. The credit contract must explain the security and what can happen after missed payments or another contract breach.

The New Zealand Consumer Protection car-loan guide explains credit contracts, repayment problems, repossession, and consumer rights.

6. Complete the lender and settlement steps

If a lender offers finance, review the full contract before you accept it. Settlement can also require seller, vehicle, insurance, and ownership information.

Dealer and private purchases have different practical steps. Use the dealer finance checklist or the private sale guide for the relevant purchase path.

Guide repayment only. Not an approval. Subject to lender criteria, affordability, asset details, terms, fees, and documents.
